Chinese Language

China has fast become an economic and financial force to be reckoned with. It’s a giant factory for several industries, such as textiles, car manufacturing or household appliances. Many businesses and organizations are hence keenly interested in exploring investment opportunities in the Chinese market.

Did you know?

Mandarin and Cantonese are two distinct varieties of spoken Chinese.

The two most spoken variants of Chinese are Mandarin and Cantonese. Mandarin is a mandatory teaching language in all China while Cantonese is spoken in southern China, especially in Guangdong Province and Hong Kong. In many cases, they are not mutually intelligible, which means that a person who speaks Mandarin could not easily understand another who speaks Cantonese, partially due to pronunciation and intonation. Nevertheless, they can mostly communicate with each other through official writing as they have some common vocabulary and alphabet.

The two main writing systems are Simplified and Traditional characters. They have notable differences in vocabulary, grammar and idiomatic terms. There are even differences in the same written form depending on the regions where it is used. By way of illustration, the word inside in Hong Kong and Taiwan in traditional Chinese is not the same.
